6 Tips to Buy & Store Coffee Beans

Dec 14, 2017  0  Ground Coffee, Coffee Bean, Coffee Storage  Kaffeine Coffee School

So you went to get a cup of coffee at your favorite coffee shop, and you decided to treat yourself with a great bag of coffee beans so you can brew up a cup at home.

But do you know how to spot good coffee beans and how to store them? If you already didn’t know, only good beans and proper storage make for a good cup of coffee.

Luckily for you, today we’re going to share some of our secrets on how to buy the best coffee beans, and some tips on how to store them!

Avoid ground/instant coffee as much as you can and buy whole beans

All these years, coffee experts have been saying, "You want to buy whole bean coffee if you're looking to have a quality cup," and we couldn’t agree more!

Whole beans naturally preserve their inherent aromatic flavor, which gives a sweeter, livelier taste.

And as they say, if you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself!

This means if the beans have already been ground, either they have been losing flavor ever since, or they have been chemically treated to preserve their flavor.

It’s better that you buy whole beans, grind them, and make fresh coffee instead of buying ground coffee itself.

No matter what, freshly ground coffee is always a win!

Buy from local coffee shops instead of the supermarket

Are you heading into a retail store or the supermarket to buy coffee beans? Turn around this instant!

Stores are the enemy of flavorful coffee. No matter what happy farmers’ faces or fresh, lovely coffee beans they slap on the package, what they sell is sub-par (well, mostly).

If you care about quality (like we know you do!), buy beans from the people who nurture a passion for coffee - visit your favorite coffee shop or local brewery if you know one.

Not only does this ensure you a healthy and delicious coffee but it also gives you a chance to nurture a bond with other coffee lovers much like yourself!

Check the roast date

We always check the expiration date before we buy packaged food items but when it comes to coffee beans, it is equally important to check the roasting date.

The lifespan of coffee after it is roasted is about a week, after that it just starts to lose its authentic taste and becomes stale. For optimum taste it is advised to make coffee two days after roasting.

That’s why it’s better to grind the coffee yourself right before you make it. You also get a lot of nutrients and antioxidants when the coffee is fresh!

Buy the right amount of coffee

After going through lots of beans and finally finding the right ones, you may be overwhelmed and buy a lot of beans.

Unless you plan to gulp down a month’s dose of caffeine or have a janti of hundreds of coffee-philes, don’t buy more than a week’s worth at a single time.

We can’t stress enough how short the lifespan of coffee is, and keeping roasted beans for a long time is injustice to all fellow coffee-philes.

Store beans in an airtight container

Just because you have bought some good quality beans doesn’t mean they will make for a great cup of coffee.

Air, heat, and moisture are your coffee beans’ greatest enemies so as soon as you bring the beans home, make sure to give them a new home in an airtight glass or a ceramic container.

All those years of recycling and storing old jam jars will not go to waste!

Store in a cool, dry place

Yes, we know how good the coffee beans look in a transparent glass container, but don’t be tempted to use it as a home decor because even daylight can affect their freshness.

The best place to store coffee beans is a cool, dark and dry place (in an airtight container). If you want to place it on a shelf where you can grab it easily, use an opaque container to protect them from the light.
